SSL Certificates and Types

There are typically 3 different “flavors” of SSL certificates.  They mostly differ on their validation methods and the warranty.

  1. Standard / Basic – Domain validation. Usually they confirm you own the domain via email or some other simple method. These are the most common, easiest to validate, offer the same security, and are the cheapest.
  2. Deluxe – Domain and organization validation. This requires additional validation of your business beyond just the domain ownership. It may include a phone call or other methods. These are more expensive and more complex to get validation from.
  3. EV or Extended Validation – The most expensive and most complex to get validated. Multiple validation methods are used to verify the business identity and domain ownership. The added bonus is you get the “green bar” of legitimacy when your web page loads. It is not more secure from a technical perspective, but customers can feel more secure in knowing that the domain they are on is your domain and not one that has been hijacked.

In addition to the above there are two “types” of certificates.

  1. Regular SSL certificates – These offer the securing of your www.domain.com
  2. Wildcard SSL certificates – These secure multiple sub-domains with one certificate. *.domain.com would secure mysite1.domain.com; mysite2.domain.com; and so on. NOTE: Wildcard SSL certificates are NOT supported with our NexCite system
